Bamboo fabric is sustainable in parts and contested in others: the raw plant is genuinely low-impact to grow, but most bamboo textiles are viscose, made using a chemical process that can pollute unless it runs in a closed loop. The honest answer depends on which stage of the story a brand is actually talking about.
That is a more complicated answer than most bamboo marketing gives you. It is also the accurate one.
Is bamboo fabric sustainable, or is this just greenwashing?
Neither extreme is right. Bamboo as a crop stacks up well against cotton on water, land and pesticide use. Bamboo as a finished sock or t-shirt depends entirely on how it was processed, and that part of the story is where a lot of "eco" language quietly does more work than the facts support.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has been explicit about this. Its 2023 greenwashing guidance found that textiles, garments and shoes were among the industries most likely to make "concerning" environmental claims, and it now expects businesses to substantiate every claim with evidence a consumer could actually check. That is a useful test for reading bamboo marketing, including ours.
What's actually true about growing bamboo
This part of the story holds up well.
- Bamboo is a grass, not a tree, and regenerates from its own root system after harvest, so the same plant keeps producing without replanting.
- It typically grows without irrigation in humid climates and needs little to no pesticide input, because few pests target it commercially.
- Australian climate nonprofit 1 Million Women cites conventional cotton at more than 20,000 litres of water per kilogram of fibre (roughly enough for one t-shirt and one pair of jeans), a figure broadly consistent with widely cited WWF cotton estimates. Bamboo's cultivation footprint sits well below that.
None of this is contested. It is the reason bamboo became attractive as a fibre source in the first place.
What gets weaker once bamboo becomes fabric
Here is where the story changes.
Almost all bamboo fabric on shelves, including most bamboo socks, is bamboo viscose (also called bamboo rayon). Making it means dissolving bamboo pulp in sodium hydroxide, then reacting it with carbon disulfide to spin it into fibre. Carbon disulfide is a recognised neurotoxin, and in older or poorly regulated mills, a meaningful share of it escapes into air and wastewater rather than being recovered.
Some manufacturers now use closed-loop viscose systems that recover the bulk of that carbon disulfide, and a smaller number use lyocell processing, which swaps the toxic solvent for a non-toxic one (NMMO) and recovers over 99 percent of it for reuse. Lyocell is the stronger claim. It is also more expensive and less common, which is exactly why so few brands lead with it.
This is also the exact issue regulators have acted on. In 2022, the US Federal Trade Commission fined Kohl's and Walmart a combined USD 5.5 million for advertising rayon-from-bamboo textiles as eco-friendly and naturally antimicrobial, when the finished fabric had none of the bamboo plant's original properties left. The FTC's own consumer guidance is blunt: bamboo processed into soft, silky fabric "has likely been turned into rayon or viscose using toxic chemicals," and that process "is far from eco-friendly".

Bamboo farming vs bamboo processing: the honesty table
This is the split most marketing glosses over. Judge the two stages separately.

Do certifications like OEKO-TEX actually mean anything here?
They mean something, but not everything. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests finished textiles against more than a thousand potentially harmful substances, which is genuinely useful for knowing what is against your skin. It does not certify sustainable production, closed-loop processing, or biodegradability. Brands that stack an OEKO-TEX badge next to unrelated eco claims are relying on a halo effect the certification was never designed to provide.
Similar caution applies to other bamboo brands in the Australian market. Some, including Boody, do disclose organic bamboo sourcing and closed-loop viscose processing, which is a more transparent approach worth acknowledging. Where the wider category still falls short is separating "we recover most of our processing chemicals" from lyocell's stronger "we recover over 99 percent," two claims that sound similar but are not the same thing.
So where does that leave bamboo socks?
Practically: bamboo is a genuinely better starting crop than cotton, but the sustainability of the finished sock depends on the mill, not the plant.
